We stayed at the Ellery House over the winter holiday. (Note, this review is during COVID, we were the only guests in the house, and Jim, the innkeeper, took multiple precautions to keep himself and us safe). The place was super quiet, clean, and situated on the NE end of Duluth with easy access to downtown and the North Shore towns. Jim was super responsive and attentive to any need. You can tell he enjoys what he does and is enthusiastic about his city, which is always a pleasure to see/experience when traveling. He is also a great cook! We would definitely return.
We stayed in the Daisy Suite. Photos show 1 breakfast, part of the bathroom (which has a tub and shower), and the day room adjoining the bedroom (no photo bc we didn't get one before we unpacked). He was amazing. I know, B&B hosts really need to be "amazing" to be a success but when you find out Jim has been a B&B host for 31 years you realize, he is REALLY AMAZING to STILL BE as patient, welcoming, sincere, inquisitive and thoughtful, as he was to us all these years later. You get burned out - Jim, if he was, didn't show it. He was BEYOND patient with my numerous phone calls (and I mean, "numerous") and he never skipped a beat. Answered them and was always willing to accommodate whatever it was I inquired about. So, that's Jim - know you've already started out on a good foot if he's at the helm. The accommodations - PERFECT. We were in town on business and the place was in a perfect location of downtown Duluth - not in the middle of the hustle and bustle but just a blip down the road in a quiet residential area. The breakfast - DELICIOUS!!!! he has mastered the art of cooking. The Rhubarb muffins were out of this world and honestly, I was afraid to eat something with Rhubarb but when he went to the trouble to have homemade muffins waiting for us in the morning, along with the scrumptious egg casserole, I wanted to be polite and try them. Oh, my gosh!!! They were soooo good. So,... I have to start off by first mentioning Jim, the host. He was amazing. He is so welcoming, so knowledgeable of the area, always willing to make recommendations on restaurants, trails, and day trips. His breakfasts are amazing, very elaborate and decorative, great flavors, very generous portions. Our room, the Daisy suite had a large bedroom, great bath, and an oh so comfortable sunroom. We hope to return in the future and we thank him for sharing his home and even his 2 dogs. Simply a first rate experience! read less

The lovely, historic atmosphere gives you a taste of the past whilst enjoying all the comforts of today. The perfect accommodations (cozy robes, romantic fireplaces, & cookies, cocoa, and coffee always available!) make this place more than worthy of your time. My only complaint is that it is right on a pretty busy street, and is a bit loud in the morning. read less

Our hotel had overbooked for a summer friday night, and every hotel/motel within 20 miles booked. We decided to check out B&B's on google maps, this is now about 8 pm after searching for well over an hour for a hotel, called The Ellery House, they had a cancellation, so we decided to give B&B a try. House is charming, our room was lovely, we stayed in the Ellery Suite. We had our 9 year old granddaughter with and the suite had a nice love-seat with pullout twin bed in sitting room - she loved it. Jim made up the twin bed while we went to grab some late supper. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic - fresh fruit, homemade strawberry rhubarb muffins & featherbed eggs. Plenty to eat and lovely visit with another couple and Jim during breakfast. Thanks JIm for a lovely stay and for accommodating us so late at night. We will be back in the future! Larry, Vicki & Kaedynce read less
